The Lithuanian used car market is rich in offers. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles from European countries, including Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, etc., are imported to this Baltic state every year.  The vast majority of these are cars in good technical condition, which have been used on good roads and regularly serviced. Read more about the Lithuanian secondary car market in our article.

Why the Lithuanian car market is popular

The Lithuanian market does not limit buyers in their choice: there are cars of all makes and models, in various configurations and condition. The large number of offers is explained very simply: loyal conditions for importing cars, fixed at the legislative level. Additional advantages: affordable prices for registration and re-registration of vehicles.

The car can be immediately customs cleared or be legally in the state, after which it can be put on the register.

The cost of used cars in Lithuania is lower than in our country, and the proximity of other European countries makes the secondary market diverse and dynamic.

Advantages of the Lithuanian secondary market

The main advantages of buying a used car in Lithuania:

  • Price. The price level in Lithuania is comparable to prices in other European countries. How favorable your deal will be depends on the age of the car, make and model.
  • Technical condition. Most vehicles come to Lithuania from other European countries, which is the reason for their good technical condition. Cars are operated on good roads, fueled with good fuel, and undergo regular maintenance.
  • Equipment. A good choice of cars in different configurations: from budget to premium. There are available configurations in which cars are produced only for the domestic market of the countries where the vehicle is manufactured.

Disadvantages of buying a used car in Lithuania

The large flow of used cars imported into Lithuania increases the probability of buying a car with defects. First of all, we are talking about restored cars. These are “broken” cars that are bought in Europe for pennies, restored and can be sold in Lithuania as vehicles in perfect condition. Repair of a car in artisanal conditions is fraught with the appearance of a large number of problems in its further operation. In addition, sellers usually lower prices on such cars by 20-30%, thus attracting buyers.

Donors for individual instances may be several cars, which makes it impossible to further customs clearance of the vehicle.

Avoid trouble by checking the VIN number of the car before buying, which will allow you to find out:

  • whether there are any legal restrictions on the operation of the vehicle;
  • odometer readings (no tampering);
  • maintenance history (if performed at authorized stations);
  • how many owners the car’s had;
  • whether the vehicle has been involved in traffic accidents;
  • how the vehicle was operated (e.g., in a cab service);
  • if the car is a wanted vehicle;
  • insurance claims;
  • what the original equipment was, etc.
